Current Updates

We are at home! We left the hospital a little before 2:00 yesterday (Friday). The doctor had come in Friday morning and said we could start feeding formula and baby food and see how he does. If he does ok he said we could go home late afternoon or evening. We tried not to get our hopes up but he drank formula ate cereal in the moring and had baby food for lunch and seemed to do fine with it. The doctor stopped by around 1:00 and asked April how he was doing and she said fine he said, "Take him home." The nurses were amazed that they were sending him home and that he has done so well. I believe our prayers were answered. We would have been happy to be able to leave by Saturday. We were elated. Truly God is good all the time! The sugeon wants to see him next Thursday just to make sure he is doing ok. He was also pleased and surprised at how well he has done. Jon

Here Nissen Fundoplication is a view of Andre's procedure and what was wrong.

Andre has done remarkable well. His only pain med is Tylenol and he seems to be doing fine with that. He was up for about 2 hours during the night last night but slept well otherwise. He likes to be held and starting smiling and "talking" today. They started giving him some apple juice around 1:00. He drank 1 oz. and about 1 hour later we gave him another 1.5 oz. Everything seem to be working as it should. He still has his IV so he isn't really hungry but he likes his juice. He has drank a total of 6 oz this afternoon. They hinted that if he continues to drink without having any problems he should be taking formula tomorrow. Thanks for your emails and phone calls. Jon

Andre did have surgery today. He had tubes put in his ears, a hearing test, (which he passed), a dilation of his esophagus, a Nissen Fundoplication, (the wrap around procedure they did on his stomach to take care of his gastric reflux) an orchioplexy, and a circ. Everything went well, He went to surgery shortly after 8:00 this morning and they got done around 10:30. He was taken to his room about 12:00. He has been a little fussy but not too bad considering what he has been through. He will not be able to have anything to eat or drink for 24 hours. It will depend how he does when he starts eating and drinking as to how long we stay here. They think it should be 3-5 days. Thanks for thinking of us and praying for us. Jon and April

Andre just made another trip to Children's Mercy in KC. We went several weeks ago to meet with 3 different specialists and see about getting surgery set up for the following procedures:
Dilation of his esophagus
Nissen Fundoplication  (an open wrap around procedure of his stomach to fix his acid reflux)
Orchiplexy (one of his testicles did not drop down)
Circumcision
Tubes in his ears
Eye surgery to correct his crossed eyes
We met with the various surgeons and all the procedures were scheduled except for his eyes and the surgeon that was planning to do the dilation would like to confirm that he does have reflux and he would like to just do the dilation and put a small probe or tube (pH probe) in his esophagus and monitor how much reflux he has over 24 hours. He would need to stay in the hospital over night for this. We will probably get his eyes done in Wichita in the next several months. The doctors would like to do as much as they can so they don't have to put him to sleep more than they have too. The surgery for the rest of the procedures is scheduled for October 26.
Today we went back up to CMH for another esophagram. (They have him drink barium and watch it on x-ray) The stricture hasn't gone away and they could see he has pretty severe reflux. I don't know how this is going to affect the upcoming surgery. (Whether they will do the open procedure on his stomach or if they will wait and see what the test shows after surgery with just the dilation.) We also met with anesthesia today in anticipation of his surgery next week.
Andre has been doing really well. He can eat #2 baby foods, cereal and his bottles but that is all. We have tried to grind food for him but his esophagus simply can't let it through. This isn't any fun for anyone. He has been gaining weight and other than several ear infections he has remained healthy. He did catch a cold that turned to croup several weeks ago but he fought through that. He started saying DA Da and when he starts something he loves to show off. He also says Mom. He can sit, not by himself but he is sitting. Just Monday he started scooting. He is a very happy boy and loves his brothers and sister. Tristan has formed a very strong bond with Andre and feels very bad that Andre has to go to all his appointments and is not thrilled at the prospect of him going back to the hospital. A therapist continues to visit Andre almost every week. April works with him tirelessly and Andre loves to hug and kiss his mother.
Pray for our family in the upcoming week and also for the surgery. This year has been a different year for our family but God has been good to us and provided us with just the right things and people we needed. If you have questions about any of this let me know. Jon
